Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to the word association. Ford started acting in her teens and became part of the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time however, Ford realised that this was not the best location for her. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning an acceptance on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. She also worked regularly at the theater, ultimately joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. However, Tate quickly began gaining attention for her stand-up comic and added stand-up comedy to her repertoire in 1996.
